Happy Birthday, Mom!

IMG_2873

As it happens every year, not only is today Mom’s birthday, it’s also the FogKnits Blog 4th Anniversary!  I’m still quite pleased that I thought about this overlap in the beginning.  I’ve always got an FO post for the blog-iversary.  It’s another project with a flower.  If there’s one thing Mom likes it’s hats with flowers!

This was a fun one! The yarn is Noro’s Rainbow Roll…aka a thick, fluffy, pencil roving.  It can be delicate and break easily so it’s not for everyone but I really love this yarn!

The pattern is Cameron’s Cap.  It’s been one of my favorites for years.  It’s a bottom up hat with a few quick short rows added to create the little ear flaps!  Perfect for winter!

The flower is a common embroidery flower.  I’m sure someone out there has a name for it but it ain’t me, babe!  I’m really pleased with it though.  And because it’s pencil roving, it’s not heavy or burdensome on the hat.  That’s always a concern when attaching a big flower.

If I had more time, I’d share a retrospective of hats with flowers or maybe give you some blog stats.  Instead you get pics of science shit.  I got right back into it on day one!  Turns out it’s like riding a bike…

And with that, I’m out the door for work.  Those electrons won’t manipulate themselves!  Happy Hump Day and Happy Birthday Mom!

Happy Birthday, MOM!

Here we are…another February 6th has rolled around!  There’s lots to celebrate today!  First, it’s Mom’s birthday!  Happy Birthday, Mom!   Here’s Mom with all the knits…

Appropriate because it’s also the FogKnits third anniversary, here at the blog and over on Etsy.

In honor of today’s special occasions, I’m pleased to announce a new collaboration with Mom and some new products in the FogKnits Etsy shop!  Without a doubt, all of my creativity comes from my Mother.  She’s got an impressive array of creative skills, from cake decorating to yarn dying.  Today, we’re showcasing her skills as a seamstress!

The FogKnits Etsy shop now has a variety of large, cotton, drawstring project bags.  All handmade by Mom!  She’s got a great selection of fabrics and she really took it to heart when I suggested a LARGE size!   In addition to just being big, each bag has a gusset bottom so it expands into a very roomy project bag, easily accommodating sweaters and even afghans in progress!  I kinda wanna keep them all!

Find all the details in the shop at www.FogKnits.etsy.com.

I’ve added some new knits as well so check those out too!   Thanks for 3 great years of knitting chat and inspiration.  I appreciate all the comments and suggestions!  I can’t wait to see what the next chapter brings!  (HINT:  Knitting for Baby)  Stay tuned for all the details!

Happy Two Year Blogiversary!

It’s that time of year…My Mom’s Birthday and my Blogiversary…conveniently located on the same day so I won’t forget!  Normally this would be a great day for a blog post…I like to knit things for Mom’s Birthday.  Unfortunately, this year things have gotten in the way.

I started blogging when I was funemployed, awash with free time.  This year, not so much.  Having been through a series of not even close to ‘real’ jobs, I’m now back to work at a very real job.

Hello Organic Chemistry!  You’re looking mighty fine today!  Also, like you want some attention, so this will be brief!

Instead of an FO worthy of one’s mother, today, I give you one third of a sock.  I’ve been dutifully carrying it with me, hoping to find time to squeeze in a row or two.  I’ll take it anyway I can get it!  This weekend that meant, knitting during brunch with friends.  Luckily, my friends all understand, the knit must go on.

Even if it’s sideways.  Eventually, a row here and a row there adds up.  I’m almost to the heel!  This is going to be a traditional gusset sock with a slip stitch heel.

sock-progress

Eventually.  I’ll keep plugging away.  Slow but steady wins the race!  And eventually, I’ll even get Mom’s Birthday present done.  It’s going to feature all those flowers I knit last fall.

It’s going to be worth the wait!  I promise!  I’ll even have time to orient the photos properly when the time comes!  Until then, it’s tech difficulty and chemistry for me!

Happy Birthday Mom!  Hope you’re having a great day!  I’ll call you when I reunite with my phone!  XOXO!

Adama for my Mama

It’s a big day here at the FogKnits headquarters!  It’s my Mom’s birthday! Whooo-hoo!  Happy Birthday Mom!  It also happens to be the FogKnits One Year Blogiversary!  Whoo-hoo!  I didn’t realize it at the time but I’ve set myself up to have a great FO revealed on the blogiversary every year!  Mom’s birthday only comes once a year after all!  Some people send love with flowers or candy, some people cook amazing meals, some people prefer jewels.  I send love with cashmere!

YOTHpuppygradient

…MCN in this case!  This is Big Sister from YOTH Yarns, an 80/10/10 merino/cashmere/nylon blend in DK weight.  It’s an absolute dream to work with!

IMG_4263

They did a local trunk show several months back and I stocked up!  I knew instantly I wanted a pink Puppy, that’s what they call the gradient on a stick!  One of a kind colors in one of a kind gradient combinations!  And they sell out everywhere they go!  These Puppies are a hot commodity and now that I’ve used one, I understand why!

IMG_5850

It’s got beautiful hand, lovely stitch definition, delightful spring, gorgeous tonal variations.  There just aren’t enough superlatives to describe it!  Throw in a little gradient action and WOW!  Even the simplest FOs are guaranteed to be nothing short of stunning!

The pattern is Adama by Hillary Smith Callis.  I love the pattern too.  It was written for worsted weight, not DK but I followed the pattern without modification for a smaller garment.

IMG_5936

Originally designed as a sort of shawl-cowl hybrid that can be worn down over the shoulders, I got a large bandana sort of cowl.  It fits close around the neck and can be pulled up over the face.   It’s perfect, I’ll definitely be repeating this pattern!  I didn’t even mind knitting lace.  Me…lace…what??  Yeah, it was that good!  I wanna do it again!  Best part…I can!  This cowl only used half the Puppy.  I can make another one in the reverse gradient!  Oh yeah!

So…Happy Birthday MOM!  If you don’t like it…send it back!  I’ll wear two! :)
