It was fun while it lasted but the Candy Dot Cowl is no more. My enthusiasm for rainbows took over for a few days. I wasn’t thinking about anything else. The rainbow on rainbow combo of Unicorn Fart yarn and a rainbow of beads really clouded my vision. That’s the only explanation I can come up with for this…
The dreaded Stockinette Curl. UGH! It’s not going away. There’s no fix for that. Blocking will not cure the curl. Not even for one millisecond. Damn you superwash!
If Ben Franklin had been a knitter he certainly would have said “…nothing can be said to be certain, except death, taxes and the stockinette curl.”
Total rookie move on my part. It’s not as though I didn’t know this would happen. I didn’t expect the results to be any different. Last night, I had a brief moment of clarity and knew there was only one way this could end. And so, it’s been frogged. It’s short life has been extinguished entirely. Gone.
The good news though, the real reason I love to knit, no harm has been done. I can start over again! I’ll get rainbow joy all over again. And this time, I’ll plan better! I’ve narrowed it down to two choices, start the cowl over again in Seed Stitch instead of Stockinette. I love seed stitch so not a bad option.
OR
A beaded rainbow Hitchhiker. My last Hitchhiker modification was adding a K2tog, Yo eyelet row. Perhaps my next modification will be adding beads to the K2tog?
Decisions, Decisions!!
oh, dear. You are right, stockinette left on it’s own curls. I vote for the hitchhiker with you telling us how you did it so we can copy. :-)

I’m leaning towards the hitchhiker! The modifications are pretty simple, on row 8 (the bind off row), work the bind off as normal and then instead of knitting across the row, (K2tog, YO) across to the last stitch, KFB. Then Row 1 (ie the next row) place a bead on each K2tog. I was really gonna try to finish some other things first but now that I’m talking about it…I wanna cast on right now :)

That sounds very pretty! I have some yarn I was contemplating doing as a hitch hiker, but my last one got a little boring. So this modification might be just the thing to keep my interest.

actually, I take that back. I always say K2tog, YO but when it comes time for my hands to do it, I actually do a YO, K2tog. :) Technicalities count in knitting!

lol got it! And I knit backwards, so I hate k2tog, I always do my version of the SSK which is to simply k2tog through the back loops from right to left, as opposed to through the front loops left to right. Because my yarn is always wrapped the wrong way, it works for me. So no worries about technicalities. :-)

:) Yeah, I don’t actually worry to0 much about that sort of stuff. I prefer the ssk as well, it had actually never occurred to me to sub it in a project like this. It wouldn’t matter one bit if I did!

right, as long as you always do it the same, so the stitches all slant the same way. It is one reason I loved the Hap for Harriet – everything is an SSK. no K2tog at all. :-) it also is garter – no purling, either!

Sounds like I need to add that to my queue :)

Oh no! That was beautiful and there was a way to make it not curl. I had the same problem on a shawl that I made out of acrylic and I used the pin and steam method. Here’s the post I did on it. https://pkcacciola.wordpress.com/2015/09/18/killing-versus-aggressive-steam-blocking/ However, as you said, easy come…easy go.

There’s was no killing this one, it’s wool. Garter stitch is the answer here :) I don’t know why I overlooked it in the first place!

What a shame you’ve had to frog it. I love that yarn though, hope you’re happier with your next project. 😊

And if I’m still not happy…I’ll knit it a third time :) LOL!

I hate curling yarn. Drives me bonkers. Drink wine. That helps. xoxo
